Essential Beard Trimming Tips

May 14, 2018

There is something wild, rugged, and manly about letting your beard grow and flourish freely. Beards are what make us the men we are, however, there will come a time when your beard looks worse than Tom Hanks’ in the movie Cast Away. When this is the case, it may be necessary to give your beard a trim.

When trimming a beard, having the proper skills and tools is essential. A beard is a prized possession, and one mistake with a pair of scissors to your beard could put your entire mane in jeopardy. Luckily, there are ways that you can ensure that your next trimming will leave you with a clean, trimmed, and stylish beard. Let’s take a look at some essential beard trimming tips.

Get The Right Tools

The first step to a safe and clean beard is having the right tools and products. First off, you’ll need a pair of quality barber scissors. Unlike what most guys believe, using your kitchen scissors will not do the trick, not to mention it’s gross. Other helpful tools to have handy are beard shampoo, a beard comb, or a beard brush.

Wash Your Beard

Having a filthy, crumb-filled beard before trimming will not end well. It is important to give your beard a thorough cleaning using a quality beard shampoo. Beard shampoo will help make your beard hair soft, pliant, and easy to groom and shape. Once the beard is washed and cleaned, ensure it is dried completely before starting to trim. Cutting a beard when it is still wet will likely result in a shorter beard than desired.

Comb Your Beard

Combing your beard before trimming it will help make the process easier. Once your beard is washed thoroughly, brush it in a downward motion using a beard comb. Keep in mind of how your beard naturally grows and ensure it goes in that direction as you comb downward. While it always isn’t necessary, combing your mane upwards after combing downwards can help separate the beard hair and get it ready for a trim.

Trim Your Beard

Now that your beard is ready for trimming, ensure that you have a mirror and a small garbage receptacle to prevent your mane hair from clogging the drains. Once you are ready to begin trimming your beard, with barber scissors in one hand and a beard comb in the other, start trimming on one side of your face. Pass the comb gently through the beard hair at a slight angle. Using the scissors, cut the beard hair that protrudes from the teeth of the beard comb. Continue this process on the other side of the face, on the jawline, the chin, and on the neck until your beard is trimmed to a desired length.

Don’t Rush Trimming

One little mistake can make beard trimming much more complex. That is why it is essential to take your time. Slowly work your way down, trimming parts of the beard as you go. Once you finish one side of your face, check to make sure that you are satisfied with the results. If so, move on to the rest of the face, and if not, go back through and do it again. Once complete, you should be left with a freshly trimmed mane!
